Goleman student Charles Lee Martinez accepted for High School Scholars class

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) High School Scholars Research Program at the University of Miami (UM) is a prestigious program designed for students interested in science.

This program allows students to get hands-on experience by conducting seven weeks worth of biomedical research during the summer.

Charles Lee Martinez, a junior at Barbara Goleman Senior High (BGHS), was recently accepted into this well-known research program.

Martinez will be allowed to research chemistry, pharmacology or neuroscience. Once the program begins, he will be paired up with another student with whom he will publish his research.

“I am eager to collaborate with others and conduct our research. This is an amazing opportunity, especially since our work will be published at the end. Working in a lab might seem dull, but to me, it’s the whole world,” states Martinez.

After the HHMI High School Scholars Research Program, Lee Martinez hopes to continue his education in the science field. He also plans on expanding his rocketry club, and accomplish his most important goal – going to Mars.

Although Martinez has a long road ahead of him and many more goals to accomplish, the research program is the first step to achieving his dreams. It has been said that the sky is the limit, but not even the sky can hold Martinez back from his aspirations.
