Political rivals gather to support mayor’s campaign
To show there were no hard feelings after Miami Lakes Mayor Cid defeated them in past elections, former mayor Wayne Slaton and former councilwoman Mary Collins threw their support behind Cid in his 2020 reelection bid.
The two former
councilmembers attended Cid’s campaign kickoff party on Sept. 25 at the Miami Lakes home of Marcos and Karol Gutierrez.
During a brief speech, Cid described his accomplishments in Miami Lakes.
“We built trust in the town of Miami Lakes after it was a major trust deficit here,” Cid said.
“We set out with two main goals: Creating more accessibility for people and transparency,” Cid said. “We went from a trust deficit to being the model for how a city interacts with residents and how transparency works for the people.”
Cid beat Slaton and then incumbent mayor Michael Pizzi in the 2016 general election, but was forced into a runoff against Pizzi two weeks later because he didn’t muster at least 51 percent of the votes in the earlier race.
Cid defeated Mary Collins in the 2012 race for her council seat and ended her 11-year presence on the panel.
At the campaign event, Cid was also joined by
Councilmen Jeffrey Rodriguez; Luis Collazo and Carlos Alvarez.
Former councilmen Robert Meador, Tim Daubert and Richard Pulido also attended.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2020.
