FIU' Morgan chosen for off field award
Florida International University quarterback James Morgan was named a nominee for the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for his work off the football field.
The Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) released its list of nominees for the annual award last week and Morgan was chosen for making an impact off the field.
A total of 137 college student-athletes with inspiring stories of community service were nominated by their respective sports information directors.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team continues to be one of the most coveted community service awards in college football. From the 137 nominees, the final roster of 23 award recipients will be announced in September, bringing together 11 players from the NCAA Football Subdivision; 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and one honorary head coach. To be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
"It's truly inspiring to see these young men dedicating their time and energy outside of their already busy schedules to leave a lasting impact in their communities," said John O'Donnell, Allstate's Western Territory president and member of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team selection committee "As a longtime college football sponsor, Allstate takes great pride in our partnership with the AFCA, and we are honored to celebrate the successes of these players and highlight their stories as an inspiration to all who love the sport."
Morgan has proved he's more than just a quarterback on the field, as he has been a staple in the Miami community. The Panther has volunteered his time at numerous outings, including spending time with local youths around the area to spread the game of football. Morgan has also excelled in the classroom, as he sports an impressive 3.33 GPA at FIU.
In his first season at FIU, Morgan took the conference by storm as he earned C-USA Newcomer of the Year honors on his way to a record-breaking season. The Green Bay, Wisconsin native broke single-season school records for passing touchdowns (26), highest passer efficiency rating (157.6) and total offense per play (7.67). Morgan also garnered C-USA Honorable Mention, C-USA Spirit of Service Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List and Manning Stars of the Week to name a few distinctions.
